In May 2007, three-year-old Madeleine McCann disappeared from an apartment bedroom in Portugal while the family was on vacation. The little girl hasn’t been seen since. Madeleine would be thirteen years old now. Who’s responsible? No one knows. I’ve mostly avoided the ongoing news story of Madeleine’s kidnapping, but for whatever it’s worth, here is my contribution.
Yesterday morning, I dreamed that the detective trail began with the questioning of an elderly witness, a man who’d waited two years to tell his story. This witness led us to the name of Gerry [I don’t remember his last name] on a pedophile list. He was a horse owner (or trainer) and a school administrator. When we visited this school, Madeleine was hugging a favorite teacher goodbye instead of running to her bored and inattentive parents like the other children, so Gerry kept her from leaving. When Madeleine was finally allowed to leave, she disappeared underground in front of the school. The top of her hand rippled under the surface of the grass, like the waves of the sea, before it too disappeared. Then I woke up.
I don’t know how to interpret this dream. I’ve never dreamed about Madeleine or any other missing person cases before. I also didn’t know, until yesterday, that Gerry is the name of Madeleine’s father and that he studied sports medicine. Is there a connection? I don’t know.
